Most people overthink prompting. You do not need a 2,000 word mega prompt or a secret list of magic words. You need a few reliable shapes you can reach for without thinking. Here are the ones I use every day.

1. Give it a role and a goal

The fastest upgrade to any answer is telling the model who it is and what you actually want. Instead of "write a cold email," try this:

You are a friendly B2B copywriter.
Goal: a 90 word cold email that books a call.
Audience: busy clinic owners.
Tone: warm, direct, zero hype.

Role plus goal plus audience plus tone covers most of the gap between a generic reply and one you can actually use.

2. Show an example of what good looks like

Models are pattern matchers. If you have one example of the output you want, paste it in and say "match this style." One good example beats a paragraph of adjectives every time.

3. Ask for the format you want

If you want a table, ask for a table. If you want five options, ask for exactly five. Vague requests get vague shapes back. Be specific:

  • "Give me 5 subject lines, ranked, one line each."
  • "Reply as a checklist I can paste into Notion."
  • "Keep it under 100 words. No preamble."

4. Let it ask you questions first

One line changes everything: "Before you answer, ask me any questions that would make your response better." This turns a one shot guess into a short conversation, and the final answer is almost always sharper.

5. Iterate instead of restarting

You rarely nail it on the first try, and that is fine. Keep going in the same thread: "shorter," "more casual," "cut the second paragraph," "now make three variations." Editing is where the quality actually shows up.

The goal is not the perfect prompt. The goal is a fast loop where each round gets you closer.

Put it together

Next time you open a blank chat, run the checklist in your head: role, goal, audience, tone, format, example. You will not need all six every time, but reaching for two or three will instantly put you ahead of most people typing one lazy line and hoping for magic.
